Listening to every heart

There, Beyond, and Back Again

It was simple enough for
flights of fancy to whisk me away,
that morning, in my want of
following the moon into its depths
of tomorrow, to its somewhere else.

I would pursue it, its travels, to see what
it sees, if tasks of normality [?]
didn’t chase after me, nipping at my heels,
and I wondered at those who can slip off
or better yet, shrug away accountability, for

I would go to where the moon goes,
and my thoughts slipped the day
in that unsayable process,
Yes, it is time to observe, again

So in feeling these, my muse tones,
a walkabout was required when noon’s hour
fell under me soon enough, and what I would see,
was anyone’s guess; how I would perceive those sights,
still known only to my muse.

So when I observed these flags, I knew…I knew

I thought of the moon again, and in its travels,
what it would see, still out there

I saw that vision as three of the flags flew free,
Country, State, City, and my mind/heart aching,
for the P.O.W. flag wound, bound around its staff,
unable to fly free, a reminder to me,
the one who would feel it as a remembrance of those
who did not return home, and can only be seen,
somewhere else, by my own moon’s glow.

And like the moon, I continue to carry
their memory with me, through all my steps,
through all my prayers.

Through an expansive walkabout you've taken me, through wonder and through pain and back to hope.  You words stretch my mind.  I'm so glad I'm coming to know you.

Karilea,
Poignant. It is indeed poignant. Thank you for remembering and sharing in such a meaningful way.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Oh, this was especially meaningful to me. I think of all those serving in Iraq right now. My son was sitting on the Kuwaiti border for 4 months waiting to go into Iraq with his hospital unit. For whatever reason, his unit did not end up going in; but I can feel for those whose sons and daughters did go in and are missing or have made the ultimate sacrifice. And, I think of all the veterans past and future who may be looking at the same moon but cannot fly their cage or will not see these home shores ever again. Excellent work, Sunshine.

Oh, I love the way good poetry rolls off my tongue....
How it makes more than verbal vibration when read out loud....
How it is much more than words spoken
How it sounds like a song...
All of these are in this poem...

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.

Oh, lady... this one's squeeze to the heart is no less intense for its gentleness. *S*

Beautiful, touching work! *S*
