On Fremont Street

A cool spot in the warm Nevada night,
the sax man plays
on Fremont Street-
a slim man clothed in black
and Blues
and framed in neon.

When he lifts his horn to heaven,
that scream climbs up
to chip pieces off
the blank obsidian sky

and broken notes tumble down
the Plaza’s golden streams.

The Las Vegas Club: his sideman
whose orange stripes pulse to the beat,

and the old Golden Gate’s sign
rocks to his rhythm.

Chattering crowds stop a moment
to listen
as his sax struts through the heat.

An opal set in glitter,
a cool spot in the warm Nevada night,
the sax man plays
on Fremont Street.

Nevada always seemed to me, warm...I had never visited it when it was cold; but I have been in the desert when it gets cold, and unless you had said it was warm, the break of the obsidian sky could have meant a long winter's night to me.

Excellent!

With your words, I'm on another street in another city... Bourbon in New Orleans... where you know he's playing for himself despite the case for coins at his feet. *S*

Excellent work! *S*

hoot- I love the saxophone and he played the alto sax and the tenor sax and even the soprano sax.  But it was the alto that he made scream. I can still hear it in my head.

Dr. Moose, I go nearly every year, and the music is so good, I wonder why I don't go more often.  Of course, then I look at my bank balance and I know why.

Sunshine, I think the sky above the Plaza is so dark and hard because of the glare.  It's right there at the end of glitter gulch, and I expect the moon could explode and you wouldn't see it.

Suthern girl, it's been so long since I walked down Bourbon Street, but I remember music. Thanks.

Nan, you took me there,  around all that
glitter,  standing as each note burned into
my soul forever.  Beautifully written,  sad
to say I have never been....but, being that
I enjoy blackjack,  perhaps that is a good
thing.

Magnus-I'm glad you got to go with me.  And it was an infinitely cheaper ride than you would have had in reality.  Especially at $5 minimum blackjack bet.

Thanks, Marge. I'm glad you're still reading and not crouching in a basement.

Pilgrimage, you took me to Los Vegas for just a moment.  This was a vibrant picture and bluesy, as well!  Much enjoyed.   ....jo

Oh, I heard this one, and it's soulful.
I'm keeping it, to listen to that sax again.

Nice picture this...

iliana, thank you so much.  I wante to share this with everyone, I'm glad it worked for you.

Snow, thank you so much.  Unfortunately, if you read other things I write you'll realize I don't have a style.  It comes out different every time, but I am glad you liked this one.

Midnitesun-

msflame-glad you enjoyed.

Larry, thanks guy.  Good to see you around.
