Quietly she lay the bed once shared,
a tear welling from misted eyes.
Thinking no one else could have cared
enough to notice each tear she dried.

She lay upon a dampened pillow
her hands beneath the tender fluff.
This tiny woman now a widow
forced to be strong, alone and tough.

They brought to her a wedding ring
an old poem and a favorite hat.
As hot tears did bitterly sting
and she asked them if that was that.

The porch was bare, the swing was still
from air that did not flow in breeze.
Her lungs did ache, she felt a chill,
how would she raise their two babies?

He wrote to her most every day
to give her strength and comfort too.
Nothing else that a man could say
as danger sought to deal their due.

And as they left and sped away
into billowing dust and haze
another passed, headed her way
as tear wrought eyes fearfully gazed.

Her courage waned, her heartbeat raced
as she rose and walked their path.
Praying to Him, to take her place...

It was Monday...
one of his letter days...

Barry

And such happens so often, we can hardly count the times or the tears.  Thank you for the touching in this!

It's writing like this that prompts me so often to stop, go upstairs, and kiss my wife goodnight.  My wife would thank you if she knew where the latest kiss in the still of the night was conceived.  Thank you for that.

Warmest regards to my brother-in-arms,

Big K

Susan

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.
