We Once Wrote Poetry

We once wrote poetry
as we lay entwined
beneath weathered quilts
where your fingers traced syllables
onto the parchment of my skin

In the dark before the light
you moved over me like a dream
all scent and touch and shadow
as I swallowed your phrases
long before they ever left your lips

Together we found our rhythm
stirring up needs
that never seemed to still

We once wrote poetry
long after the sunsets afterglow
and fell asleep dreaming
that our words would last forever

We once wrote poetry
now all that remain
are empty sheets

I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S

RUTH....

wow.

I like it when my favorites poets and I are on the "same wavelength" of sorts.

I like it even better when I see your name.

Absolutely beautiful and heart wrenching -  wow.

This is exquisite! I should have expected the sad ending from the title... but I was too caught up in your beautiful depiction of the poetry lovers write... much like life, I guess... the ending isn't always as we'd like. *S* Excellent!

Ruth, thank goodness you still do write poetry. This is such a poignant piece.

Hoot, a sad, quiet little thing, this, that breathes in a house alone.

Hope all is well with you, dear one.
