Life slips from her frail body In predictable increments, Each day a devastating eternity To those who bleed their prayers. My own heart hides the uneasy thought, Fourteen is such a young age To die… I marvel at the composure And assurance she radiates, Even though the mirror reflects A face puffed up like a melon— The sad byproduct Of medical desperation. She humbles me: Will I be able to do the same When my time finally arrives? And she frightens me: Is my faith just as strong? Or was it ever? Or is it merely a ruse Carried as armor for thirty years? For I sense that her faith is genuine— Equal to that of the ancient martyrs! Nervous…how nervous This stomach becomes When confronted With the inevitable end That her withering Yet glowing form represents-- Which makes my distressed soul cry out From the Cimmerian depths, O Jesus! What is Your purpose in this? An answer— Perhaps only wishful rationale— Speaks faintly In a child’s trusting voice, To show the way To Father’s home… ------------------ |
