On the peaceful road, Walking in the farming land, Continual strode With only his staff in hand, Greeting those in field That wear coats of dirt and sweat Struggling for food to yield. “Minister Zhan Zhing come stay with us for dinner, listen to birds sing that have returned from winter” They to him were nice, Inviting to come and share Their vegetables and rice. “Where do you now go Far from your desk in city?” Zhan does not now know He goes to look for beauty In western mountain, Zhan knows too much of comfort Peace he wants to understand They offered a bed, Beside the fire slept warm Just to rest his head Till the coming of the morn, Quiet left the place Before the rising of the sun Exchanging his coat for grace. There was chill in wind Before the sun had yet to be Old coats let cold in Through the rips he couldn’t see By Dawn he’d gone miles Yet in those tattered pockets Carried peaceful peasant smiles.
