Rusty Nails and Bottomless Pails

Reason surfaces
between writing your name
on the blood red cloth –
corner table
back of the bar –
Jim Beam
Black-bottom Beer
Rusty Nails
and bottomless pails
of saltwater peanuts
thrown to the floor.

I try not to remember
the good
the love
the tangle of arms and legs
lips and hearts –
it interferes with the hate
I’m fostering –
but reason surfaces
and I still don’t know any more
than I did
lifetimes ago –

Of writing your name
on blood red cloth
in the back of a bar
drowning in Jim Beam
Black-bottom Beer
Rusty Nails
and bottomless pails
of saltwater peanuts

Wishing
longing for the good
the love
the tangle of arms and legs
lips and hearts

Reason surfaces
and I still don’t know any more
than I did
lifetimes ago –

Oh my
oh God –

Why

note: had this title for months and months - couldn't figure how to use it - finally a month or so back came up with the first stanza - nothing more until tonight, just now...hope you like it.

Age doesn't really bring wisdom -- only a kind of reluctance that we call wisdom out of embarrassment!

I've served a few customers like you, j.

they "doodle" in their minds, half there, always remembering the elusive "her."

smiling.

Love this.

Excellent write Jimmy...much enjoyed the view from your eyes.
Hugs~

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back

The picture that comes to mind when I read this was.........Maybe a sea faring man coming to shore going to the bar near the wharf. Going in.. smoke curling in a smoky haze, the smell of stale beer and crushed peanuts upon the floor. He sits down...maybe lighting his old pipe.. swills a pint of beer and waves his glass high for more as he sits and ponders his past...his life and wonders if he had made a wrong turn as he thinks of the woman lost to him.
Good one

It was a passionate affair with a bitter breakup. Yes, the pain of simply remembering. The good times keep surfacing for some reason. Gawd I hate that feeling .... pass me a brew will ya?
Great write Jimmy.

Jimmy, I did like it!  I could just see this scene, really.  Great imagery and expression.   ......jo
