in the shadows

Early last Sunday morning
I went shooting,
clays birds in the wind,
for me
it is relaxing,
like meditation,
with just a little Zen thrown in.
When I am able,
I become not the target
nor the shotgun,
but the moment of the flight,
and when the bird just turns to dust
I know I've done it right.

Wearing shooter's plugs,
we're just old men
communicating without talk
waiting turns to take the cages.
I watched a red tailed hawk
working on the wood line
just beyond the fall of shot,
lazy with precision,
he was beauty in the sun;
playing in the thermals,
his day had just begun.

A subtle dip,
a shift of wing,
tail down to make the turn,
he was hunting for his breakfast,
I waited for his run;
a little height,
a little more,
up and back and he was set,
then quickly tucked and folded
he dropped like he was jet propelled,
disappearing;
in the shadows of the trees
he had become the moment of the flight.

"he had become the moment of the flight."

and you soar also when you write this way.

Icebox,
I'm glad you have written this.  I've watched clay pigeon shooters with great admiration for the precision for which they strive and for the meditative qualities it must bring to the mind.  All too often, when the image of a gun comes to mind, fear can be the first reaction of some, blocking out all other intent....i.e. your appreciation for the hawk in his daily routine. You've done a great job describing the difference, just by speaking from your heart.  ~K~

I enjoyed this.  It is true, it is somehow meditative to focus, aim and find your target.  I feel the same even on the range merely shooting at a small black dot.  But shooting out doors is best.  Thanks for sharing.

Very enjoyable read.
Thank you sir.

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back

yes, the focus
but more important, there were no bullets
and no creature suffered
