Gray

Color offers black and white
'lest you stand 'tween day and night.

I've been told through many strife
that gray gives way to a richer life.

There is no middle ground to the turmoil within.
Actions are clearly defined as sin.

A struggle within consumes my mind.
Why have I become so blind?

Expecting to be seen in compassionate gray;
why can't I this homage pay?

I am no different from these restless souls.
They have hearts and dreams and goals.

Why haven't I seen that light
when day trancends to the dark of night?

I must have noticed this subtle transition
sometime in life without position.

The sun set today as I watched amazed
and remembered these sights from childhood's days.

Days gone by, leaves on the wind,
force me to realize the fool I've been.

Living life without gray and depth
has left me listless with shallow breath.

Learn to live, to love and see.
There is no difference 'tween you and me.

Moments are fleeting, same leaves on the wind,
full of color this time lending peace to an end.

There are times when black and white must rule
but we must keep gray as humanity's tool.

Fortunate soul, with the leaves on that wind.
Last breath awaits, alas, I know who I've been.

For all the colors I've seen and all that I am
I remained nothing more than a simple man.

How often I have tried to explain to some people that I see in gray...

that middle road, albeit not always the best place to be for some, does allow us to see both sides, does it not?

Oh, and "humanity"?  Can sometimes be rewritten as "humility"...and mean as much...

I do so enjoy your writings, Kevin.

ah yes Kevin, those gray areas....and I am no stranger to those areas.  Your writing captures my interest, you have much to share I see.  Oh and if I didn't say it before, welcome to Passions. I will be keeping and eye out for you...

So many quality poets have come to this site...yours is truly unique, and though it seems simple on the surface, there's depth a'plenty.

To tell the truth, I admire people who are able to see things in black and white most of the time because it makes decision making easier.  Myself, my life has been shades of gray, mostly.  Greaet write!

Hmm, i don't know exactly the sentiments you wish to evoke in the reader by your ending. sometimes, i wish to be simple. other times, i yearn for complexity. am i too wishy-washy for my own good?

enjoyed the read
