My heart sorrows
At your aging
At the frailty of your step
My heart troubles
At the hollow of your eyes
And the distance held within
You are leaving me
It is evident in your fading breath

Then . . .
Where then shall I be
When your shadow is finally lost
Only traces of you left to memory?

I once saw you as invincible
Ageless in your age
Strength evident in your stride
Purpose wrought in your step

You are my Father
The man who for so long carried me
And even now, even now you carry me
In your love and tenderness

But . . .

But it is no longer enough, I think
A Daughter’s love
You long for your lost companion
Who has left you a drift and alone
Not knowing what to do with yourself
Now that she is gone

And I?

I understand the longing of your heart.

Still . . .

Still I ask, oh dearest one
Do not yet follow the setting of the Sun
Linger here a while longer
For to lose you too, my heart could not bear
And I would be left adrift at sea
Bereft.

Susan, how well I understand.  My father died in 1976, and left my mother behind all these years, and now that she is 83, I do not know what I would do without her either.   .....jo

Oh I know this feeling well...
After my mother passed my dad lived on close to another 30 years...so sad.
He missed her terribly all those years...

Susan, you got to me with these words especially. One part of us understands their need to "go home" .... and the little child in us wants them to stay awhile longer. Hugging you here dear lady. Chris

Thank you all so much for your heartfelt hugs.  I just visited with Dad today on the way home from work.  It's a hard thing to see.  And Chris, what you say is so true.

Thanks again -- hugs Susan

Utterly touching.... I have a father poem I've been keeping back....after reading this, I think it's time to post it.
