Forty-one Cents I’m with a platoon of soldiers On a jungle-covered island Somewhere in the Philippines. Our assignment is to fire Rocket-propelled artillery shells Out over the ocean. We know the Japanese Will respond to this provocation, And begin hiking through the forest To the other side of the island Well out of the way Before the inevitable Japanese attack. My wife and I Are captured separately by the Japanese. I ponder: What a strange idea … Me … … wife … The Japanese are polite And perform some kind of mystic zen or yoga, Hippie tao zen sufi budhist tantra meditation mantra, But the ritual, or whatever it is, Is strange, bizarre, Cartoonish and nonsensical. My “wife” passes a note To her Japanese guard. Her Japanese guard passes the note To my Japanese guard. My Japanese guard Then passes the note to me. I open the note And it contains forty-one cents. Then the scene changes. I’m watching public television. It’s a documentary about wainright and Mc-Arthur, The great carrier battles Of the Pacific war … Who needs forty-one cents? JAIME! what were you eating for dinner? LOL, musta been something well-fermented. I gotta say, that ending 'commie' line still bothers me (even understanding your sense of humor). Now the forty one cents makes sense...sort-of. |
