It is a warm spring day
in southern Lousiana..
The car careens freely
down the gravel road.

Birds swirl through the tree tops
alarmed by the silence.
The blond beauty beside him
stretches back in the sunshine.

What a glorious day
says Clyde to sweet Bonnie.
I wonder if they have a bank
in the next town?

Now imagine you are Ruth Warren
of Topeka, Kansas,
and that's your 1934 Ford Sedan,
Desert Sand in color.

Or imagine the smiling mortician
at Conger's Funeral Home
in nearby Arcadia,
loafing around on this dull day.

Nice! And proof that a poem can shout something without ever saying it....

I'll admit I didn't recognize the date... until the second line... then this Louisiana gal woke up in a hurry! *S*

I love the way your focus on the peripheral players paints such an intense picture of the center of the storm... Excellent work!!

I saw the date and had to read.  Great piece.  I enjoyed it quite a bit.  I was intrigued by your topic.  Bonnie and Clyde had a hideout the next street down from where I currently sit at home just Southeast of Corsicana, TX.  The have pics of them in the town museum called "Pioneer Village" some of which were where the Richland-Chambers reservoir now sits ...across the street from my home.  They were locals here.  We had a tornado in Frost, TX, still in our county, I think in 1932.  They found a car that had been thrown up against a building amidst the debris and destruction.  When they traced it to the owner they came up with Clyde Barrows.  There was a pistol found in the glove box.  They have a picture of the car in the debris at the museum, too.
Thanks for reminding me of my home's rich history.

Kevin
