Moved from a shack to a barn

Where did all of the old gods go
when they were no longer wanted,
after the temples they had been evicted from
have tumbled and crumbled?

Do you think they quietly accepted their pensions
and checked themselves into a retirement home
to spend eternity reliving tales of the good old days
over endless games of Pinochle?

Or could they be pursuing their occupations, still
in some diminished capacity?

Ceres, now as thin as a wheat straw
tending her small window garden
on the fire escape of her rented room

And the sweating old man leaning on his shovel
while a cement liner is lowered into his days’ labor
Could this be Pluto, just keeping his hand in?

What of Bacchus? Is he now living in a rough camp
under some overpass with other cast outs?
Men, who in another time, would have been celebrants

Or Venus, does she yet accept offerings and sacrifices?
Bruises on her thighs just visible below her too tight skirt
and a weary lostness, visible in the harsh light of neon

I am the Lord, your God, who lead you from the land of Egypt to be a god to you. I am the Lord, your God.

(Just to help translate a previous quote. Ed, I lived in Israel for a year, and know a bit of Hebrew. But you can translate this online these days without knowing any Hebrew)

as always, your poetry makes me ponder

I think you nailed this one!

They are still around, just mostly unemployed.

It is surprising how friendly they can be.

Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohaynu Adonai Echad.
Hear, Israel, the L-rd is our G-d, the L-rd is One. Barukh Shem k'vod malkhuto l'olam va-ed
Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever
V-ahavta et Adonai Elohecha b-chol l'vavcha u-v-chol naf'sh'cha u-v-chol m'odecha.
And you shall love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
V-hayu ha-d'varim ha-ayleh asher anochi m'tzav'cha ha-yom al l'vavecha.
And these words that I command you today shall be in your heart.
V-shinantam l-vanecha, v-dibarta bam b-shivt'cha b-vaytecha, u-v-lecht'cha ba-derech, u-v-shachb'cha u-v-kumecha.
And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.
U-k'shartam l'ot al yadecha, v-hayu l-totafot bayn aynecha.
And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

U-chtavtam al m'zuzot baytecha u-vi-sharecha.

And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Ed this is the Shema a very important prayer to me as a Jew. I thought you may enjoy this prayer.

I also wanted to correct a statement that was made by one of your fans...Hebrew can not be translated properly online. But there are great sites that can help you learn Hebrew if you wish to learn.

Again Great work!!! Enjoyed

Shalom

I often find the thoughts you poetically ponder still hanging around my head...hours, sometimes days, later.  Very cool write Ed...as always.

Wranx,
I'm reading your box about constructive critiques;  I'm glad that "it's not just one of those passing things like bowling or decoupage."   Your writing radiates wisdom in such a pleasant, unforced manner.  It's always a treat to uncover its riches.
