Bridges

I identify bridges in their suspension
On erected pilings driven
Laying no stock on sandy bottom
Only sweat and blood of bedrock
In heavy breathing to death
Do bridges span our lives

I see bridges in constellations’ foolish disparity
From star to point and North
On sterile compass headings
Frozen onward inky blackness
To bridge thought with imaginings

I follow bridges raftered leading
And mock the crossing’s distance
With my footsteps lost on current swells
Anchored resolutely in my understanding
of minds,
lives apart, bridged together

Robert

Robert,
Incredible imagery and depth!  A couple of months ago I read an article in Discover
about the plans for new ultra modern bridges to be erected spanning several miles, breaking the world records by far.  If you like science and happen to be fascinated with bridges, the article was enlightening.
(I had thought I might write one about the article, but haven't gotten to it.)

I was amazed at your transition between the first stanza and the second where you spoke about the bridging of stars, compass, etc.   Very smooth.   Enjoyed.
