As I lay here on the prairie,
With my leggins 'neath my head.
The starry sky a canopy,
Above my canvas bed...

The smell of sage upon the wind,
The sweetest of perfume;
The great, southwestern deserts
Are this cowboy's living room.

My thoughts go backward thirty years,
A time when I was young.
A foot-loose, drifting cowboy-
In the land from which I sprung.

From the California mountains,
To the Arizona range...
A throwback to a bygone age,
Who could not seem to change.

I think of faded romance-
Their names are lost to time.
But I'll immortalize them,
Here within my lines of rhyme.

I think of love that almost was...
And love not meant to be;
Only memories of them-
Are here tonight with me.

Don't think my words depressing-
I merely reminisce-
And think of all the miles and years,
Which brought me here to this.

I think of men I worked with-
Most of them long dead,
Yet they seem to gather round,
As I lay here in my bed.

There's Mr. Fred, and Ken, and Cal-
I heard the voice of Jack:
Their laughter and their kidding,
Seem to somehow take me back...

To days out on the Bar T Bar,
Between Winslow and Flagg,
Living in the bunkhouse-
Still a youngster riding drag.

Please don't extend your pity,
There is joy in my heart.
I know we'll soon be re-united-
Where death no more will part.

So as I close my eyes tonight,
And lay me down to sleep-
I pray the One who made it all,
My wayward soul to keep.

I hope to see you in Heaven. The gift he gave you moves me...rocks me like a lullaby.

Yep, you never let me down...
This write makes me feel somewhat juvenile,
but then the understanding of it all that I already have kind of scares me.
In time though, in time I'll really know...

"rocks me like a lullabye"...
yes, one of the best compliments ever
give you, Sir....

wish I had been the first one to give it.

Thank you.
