We are as trees you and I our roots planted deep and entwined in our shared heritage the waters of our respective family's history nurtured us and gave us the tools to grow Closer than the air were we we had been planted far enough apart that our branches barely touched - Yet they touched none the less. Your branches reaching to me for comfort and mine shadowing you protecting you from the harsh sunlight together, we stood tall against the vagaries of the world stronger because our roots were entwined You taught me to glory in the sunshine to relish the rain and I taught you how to protect yourself when you were wounded by the careless passing of those who did not know - did not understand I taught you to bend in the winds of chance and to allow yourself time for nurture so that healing could take place We grew together you and I until the winds of fate uprooted you and dragged you away then I heard your voice sent softly on the breeze of letters and emails How we laughed at the dark. Defying the coming of the new age where trees were not respected - not wanted I watched helplessly as your sap failed and you withered in your new environment I felt your pain groaning in the air, as you were hacked and discarded left to die in a wasteland you did not understand and could not grow in Then like a winters chill I saw you denuded of life - of hope in sympathy my leaves fell I bent under the weight of grief. but our roots go deep I remember the history of us so I know that buried somewhere is the kernel of hope that was you and I wait eagerly for the spring of our reunion Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Lynne, love every single line...filled with so much care and love. beautiful. Maree Beauty of the world which is soon to perish has two edges, one of laughter and one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder. |

I am surrounded by a small stand of very old and very large american elm trees. They are all infected with elm disease but are kept alive as long as possible for the purpose of reseach on the disease. The trees are magnificent and over many years I have come to understand that they are more aware of me than I could ever be of them. Your poem made me stop and remember. Thank you. |

Kethry, possibly one of your best poems ever. You've personified the glory, you've described the heartbreak... even a logger would stop and consider, and possibly lay aside the axe, for this one. |
