Of Crow And Mourning Dove

A bolus of cold leaves clogs the gutter.
One crow rummages something hapless
out of the pile, flies a step to eat.
Its call echoes stark as concrete
through the auburn light.

Dove is close now, still searching,
Her voice near yet far, a shadowy crochet
of sadness along the edge of hearing
as she moves, a hesitating pastel spirit
along the flowered hedge.

She seems to live in mourning,
and today the crow knows why.
So does she; the shattered nest
remains, a spall of tiny feathers
still dusting the twilit grass.

She calls again in tones as smooth
as dusk, but there comes no answer.
Tomorrow will bring forgetting,
but today she searches endlessly,
while the crow eats.

Ed

It is the way of things, I know....but I can't help but relate this to myself and feel the loss.  The mourning dove may forget, I search still!

The imagery in this is superb...and I had to look up a certain word, bolus.  You are a gifted poet and I'm so glad to see you posting!

May I just join the circle, and thank you once again, for your excellent insight, as the world speeds on?  You seem able to slow it down for a moment, a gift, indeed, and allow us a brief respite, to feel, with soul.

Thank God for you.

Ratleader,
I'm glad I, too, stopped to read this.  Your imagery is tremendous.  Yes, time did
slow as I sadly sank into this.  You are so gifted in observation and planting its seeds.  Take care(I agree with Sunshine-I thank God for you.)

This is one of your best, my friend... The imagery is beyond beautiful... I don't just see... I hear. *S*

Tomorrow will bring forgetting,
but today she searches endlessly,
while the crow eats.

I didn't want it to end... but what an incredible ending!!! This is poetry at its best!!!

sad, Ed

last year I came out of a store and on the walk was a dove... standing  around a small, what looked like pile.

It was her baby that either fell out of the nest in the eaves or was pushed out...and   people could walk right up to the area and she wouldn't move...keeping watch.

good write

I know a crow and I know a dove.  And, it is uncanny how you have captured both!

perhaps one day, the crow and dove will join together at a table of unfathomable wealth...peace, joy, music...

Your words are accepting yet, understanding the way of things...very much enjoyed this read.
