They fly in low; how do they know,
Fresh meals abound where furrows turn?
What lures the seabirds, far from oceans
When dame April calls the farmer out,
To turn in chaff with horse and mold-?
*
Some tilt and land, some choose to wheel,
All squawk!... when close comes near,
The tiller by the landed rise again
To only circle 'round and 'light behind.
*
Nearby, the wife of him that plows
Emerges from their house
To pin white sheets to lines,
That dried above the stove all winter;
Acting out a ritual, like gulls.
*
Down she bends to basket, then
Up she rises once again
Mocking birds that lift and land,
Out in the field, in timed repeats.

Ford, how apropos...
did you know

the seagull flies in from the coast
and sets the sea down on its host
to pick the ground then fly in air
as tide and shore are in repair...

that Kansas sees the whitest wing
and sounds are heard from ocean's spring
and cows? they sound to complete the din
that's when we know, our spring is in...

I liked this...it has several layers...and they are all good...you have captured the cyclic nature of all things quite well

Ice, what can I add to Sunshine's excellent response and that of Steavenr's, as well.  (Both of which I believe were right on.)  Ah..........I liked the motion picture that I read and watched in slow motion!

Hello Ford,
Your poem sounds like my neighbors down the road who own a farm.
Thank-you for giving me a smile after 8 painstaking hours tonight.

:-)

Ps.The poem is wonderful

A very good read, Sir...

past moments reflected well,
so well, they deserve a second viewing
