There Lies a Woman

There lies a woman, cold as snow
In satin wraps and opal glow
Her pearly knuckles, stiffly bent,
Protrude from out the floral scent
That permeates each inward breath
With petal whiffs as cold as death

Tis but a skeleton that’s dressed
In ivory sheets and laid to rest
The plush of pillow 'neath her head
Endowing her a softer bed
Though in the stillness of her eye
She knows more comfort than do I

Her legacy, some passing tears
A few remarks to sketch the years
With penciled words as gray as lead
To paint a portrait of the dead
But in her life’s simplicity
She knew a greater love than me

Her sacred lot, a withered field
Left years to dry without a yield
But through life’s cruel adversity
She reaped more fertile fields than me
And though her bones in stillness lie
She knows a greater joy than I

Liz

This is so poignant, with an edge that I don't often see in your writing.

I like the softness the words create. Such a lovely write!
