In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream At night we ride past mansions of glory in suicide machines Sprung from cages out on highway 9, Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin' out over the line (Bruce Springsteen) * (Age) Of New Desires And Rages (1963) by f.hume aka ice * Dressed in what rages And cloaks of desire; On sixth-day nights, sparks fly From smoking tires, unleashing Lions, caged in souped up engines, Emitting roars from open-end lakers; Costumes and set Of teenaged gladiators. * Just get in and floor the son of a bitch, Blast off to no where in particular Past the limits of common town Passing pastoral settlements Of bourgeois palace/castles, Where three drink train commuters Inhabit.. home-working briefcase papers Into ever increasing power; Even on Saturday night. * No one waits on the other end, There is none, but we follow Close, the most reckless, his plastic Red rocket taillights glare Are maps, of the way to places Unknown; where we want to be; One hand gripping the wheel, The other kneading her knee. |

I have young children and I work around young (almost) adults. I am sad at times when I think that they will never know the freedom we had in this country then. I guess being male often links this thought to the cars and bikes I drove and rode. Real power monsters drinking gasoline like there was no tomorrow; of course for many, there really was no tomorrow. When high test (before "premium") was 20 cents a gallon and any motor putting out less than 400 horse power was simply a waste of time, when there were still states with no speed limits on the open road, when war was deadly but sex was safe, it was possible to live fast, be free and maybe even survive. It is very unlikely that my children will ever drive a car with a power to weight ratio that is almost as tight as a motorcycle's, and when I try to give them a sense of it, I find it is beyond their grasp. My favorite was a '58 Impala hardtop with a 358 cubic inch "stone crusher" motor, a 3/4 cam and twin progressively linked four barrel carbs. It would do zero to 60 in 6 seconds on a dry day with street tires and run comfortably at 160 MPH on a decent highway and got about 6 miles to the gallon. It could eat 409's for a snack. I guess I wasn't environmentally conscious back then. *smile* You made me all misty this morning. Thanks! |

OK, so you made me conjure up a James Dean image; then I reminded my first car(which I bought in 1965)...a 1953 Chevy that handled like a Sherman tank on Mulholland Drive but took me everywhere I needed to go for three years before I bought my first VDUB. |

You could take your words and make it done on feet because the words power I wonder whether men do look away from a beautiful woman and concentrate on the substance of an advert. Machines are machines, people are people and how they behave is personal, but driven by understand not government or control. People are responsible. Dave |
