I've trampled over it, kicked it and cursed it
it lies in the shadows of the window seat above it
beside a wicker couch stained by years of summersun

this treasure chest that cries "play ball"
an allegory of one mother's rising star

open the bag , what will you find?
empty seeds of tall flowers that stalk the sun
silver foil wrappings from assorted flavored gum
runner-up trophies tossed beside hot dog drippings
and trimmings of accumulations of celebrations,

come september, this boy is college bound
but for now, this one remaining season,
he's still mine, on mama's time,

round the bases,
gather the days into years,
in balls and strikes,
talley marks etched on one player's scorecard,

circle the bases,
stealing second, rounding third,
my heart sails right beside yours

your feet flying high
on a playground of boyhood dreams

taking both baby and giant steps
always remember
i walk them too,

my heart breathes
deeply, the life
of you

life is so much like America's favorite pasttime...and parents are like the minor leagues...we teach them everything they'll need to know, hone their skills, remind them of the basics, teach them team spirit and sacrificing for the good of the team, and then when the time comes (like going off to college), hopefully send them off to the 'bigs' where they'll become superstars and make us really proud...good write, coach

Well done, I have one off to college next fall.  Like the poem, I live vicariously, each foot race, remembering when it was my turn. I find the whole experience bitter- sweet as well.

But time makes you bolder,
even children get older,
and I'm getting older too~

Do I ever know these feelings, and you wrote them so  well!!
Hugs,  good Mama~
