As we sat there in the soft moonlight.
I tried to open up your heart
And took your hand in mine.
But the air around us held a frost
That spoke of all the love we’ve lost.
I’ve heard you every signal now;
This love has lost its shine.

Your cold heart chilled my soul tonight,
So I’ll leave it behind.
I hope that somehow there’s a way
For love to ease your mind.
I honestly wish your heart well
But I have to move along.
You’ve given me the melody;
Now here’s the break-up song.

My choice might seem too hasty here,
But you don’t want to have me near.
I’ll end it all before I end up
Hurt worse than before.
It’s over now; I know that much.
I hate to leave behind your touch,
But it’s better for the both of us;
We’re looking for much more.

I wish I could be sorry,
But I know I have to go.
Once I thought we had a chance,
But it was never so.
I won’t hold this against you;
I’ll forgive you for each wrong.
Just listen to my melody;
This is the break-up song.

By now the tears are in your eyes,
But I’m not there to hear your cries.
Will you even miss my love
Somewhere on down the road?
You burdened me with every care;
Now it’s too late and I’m out there.
My heart is finally breaking free
And casting off that load.

Don’t try to chase me down again;
It will not help a thing.
I’ll speak my mind more freely,
And my voice is going to ring.
We were never meant to be,
So I’ll just say, “So long.”
I finally found a melody;
Now hear the break-up song.
