They loved Mahler, Vaughn Williams, the Kotzschmar, read Leaves of Grass to the wind on Bigelow mountain, sunned on Long Island's deserted beach and named the stars for each other on the last ferry home. They captured their world in photographs - wildflowers, seascapes, and winter's inevitable surrender, climbed Katahdin to a surreal, untouchable universe, until the first snowfall. Forty years they lived in a garret under eaves of hemlock and elm, where mountain winds that cradled their words swept down in billows soft as first snowfall, or the touch of a lover's hand, and brushed away whispers condemning the love of a man for another.
