across from the mill pond with the japanese bridge and the mallards that gave up their winged migration to winter on bread crumbs left by the bird man with the shopping cart caravan little Virginia, ward of the court newly emancipated to a concrete park bench, dreams of a placement, a room of her own red bricked in the tenement that faces the bay and the lighthouse. with her backpack of rags and broken home poems, she sleeps under cold stars and a cloud covered moon shivering ‘til morning when rising sun opens the water lilies and her hopeless heart to bask in the bliss of the new day that’s begun. |
