across from the mill pond
with the japanese bridge
and the mallards that gave up
their winged migration
to winter on bread crumbs
left by the bird man
with the shopping cart caravan

little Virginia, ward of the court
newly emancipated
to a concrete park bench,
dreams of a placement,
a room of her own
red bricked in the tenement
that faces the bay
and the lighthouse.

with her backpack of rags
and broken home poems,
she sleeps under cold stars
and a cloud covered moon
shivering ‘til morning
when rising sun
opens the water lilies
and her hopeless heart
to bask in the bliss
of the new day that’s begun.

Jennifer~
I like the 'start' of this ...
It would make a wonderful expanded story~
Maybe ?

Thanks, Marge, that's a wonderful suggestion. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Very composed, very gripped. Country genre, I like it.
