I was inspired to write this poem after reading a book about two British girls taken to the Yemen and sold by their father into marriage. It was a heart wrenching book and a true story. I hope you like the poem. A girl, a babe, of Yemen born A Country ravaged and so torn From Western culture, so estranged, No democracies of that I’m pained. Promised, married whilst still a girl No choice, no freedom, unfair world. Knows no difference, ruled by men That’s her lot and will defend, A culture alien, religion extreme She does believe she is supreme. Exposed, possibilities and to change Overwhelmed, sheer possible range. Once eyes are open in danger lies As more to life, and so she tries, to change the views of that accepted, volatile response and so rejected. Persecuted for her freedom of thought, a sad life outcast and overwrought. Trapped in a life, culture, empty Values held, repressed a plenty. All we can do is pray for change and spread the word in conscience gain. |
