Maybe I'm old-fashioned...
Perhaps I am a fool.
I used to pledge allegiance...
In the classroom of my school.

My dad was in Korea-
The Chosin Reservoir-
My uncle served in World War II
The war to end all wars.

I grew up watching Combat...
"The Naked and the Dead"
And words like "peace with honor"...
Kept ringing in my head.

John Wayne, and Audie Murphy-
Role models, I adored...
Ensconced now in Valhalla-
The warriors rich reward...

Things seemed to change in '68-
Got worse in '69...
Unpopular..but all we had...
That dirty war of mine.

We flew away with dreams, my friend
Of glory! Don't you know?
But we came back to ridicule...
Confusion, pain, and woe.

Burned by tropic suns, we seemed-
Like foreign legionnaires.
Still innocent beneath our tans...
To political affairs.

Baby killers! One girl screamed-
And spat upon my greens.
Ridicule, hate..obscene-
And, "Poof", went all our dreams.

Turn to drink, or drugs? Not me-
I quickly built a wall...
Then safely hidden did I watch,
My brothers slip and fall.

Did I object? Of course I did-
But only in my heart.
Ashamed of how my people felt-
That I had taken part.

I'm older now, and often ask,
"Why? I wonder why?
America forgot her dead...
And now I can but try...

To make the stand I didn't then...
And raise my voice, and rave-
"If you don't love her, leave her-
Long may her banner wave!"

A fool? I guess perhaps I am-
I love her golden grain...
Those purple mountain majesties,
Above the fruited plain...

But most of all I love the stamp-
On mammon which shall rust...
Each bill and coin in our great land...
Does bear..."In God We Trust".

I'm glad I came by today.  I just wanted to see what was going on, and I found a gem. Thank you.

Still trusting in God...the minority is trying to push their desires on the majority by using sympathetic Judges...as far as I know if this were put to a vote we are still a Country that has put their trust in God...and God help those that don't...James

Gunslinger -- thank you for serving your country then and now.  I'm sending this to a veteran friend of mine if that's okay?  By the way, I think this would make great song lyrics!
