New Year’s, 1951

I am not sure
what all passed by…
for I never asked about their first
New Year’s Day…

I should have.  All I can envision
are two, gloriously in love
after four months of marriage,
making the best in a small alcove
of an apartment,
a small tree, perhaps, tinsel in sparkle
huge lights too big and heavy
for the spiny stems of a small
evergreen tree…

All I can imagine are the colors
and sounds of a very early
1951, the world before them,
him in his handsome best, and she
in her dreams of youth…

then time passed, too quickly,
parents thinking by some kind osmosis,
children should just know
everything that had occurred
before their birth…

all I know is
37 years later,
she kissed him a Happy New Year
as if she were that youthful girl
and he, he looked at her
with his handsome best.

How better to celebrate
a wonderful life?

Yes, how better to celebrate life?
Love the new pic as well.

Karilea

With his handsome best...that line just brought it all home.  A very touching poem.

Oh, this is beautiful, it reminds me of my Mom and Dad (when he was still alive)

Thanks Karilea.

I don't think there is any better way to celebrate!

How fortunate to still love like that after all the years.

A wonderful life, and a wonderful telling, indeed~

You do capture the essence of a relationship that lasts..so well.  KJ
