I sit in this chair.
He stands over there.
He turns, smiles, and then looks away.
I wonder, will I have the courage to tell him today.
I do.

We're together now, it's been a year.
Everyday he says the one thing I want to hear.
"I love you" he says
Then he asks "Do you love me too?"
I do.

He got a letter today.
They're sending him away.
Over seas, to join the fight.
The worse part about it; he's leaving tonight.
He asks if I miss him.
I do.

He writes me letters everyday.
He says he loves me in everyway.
He asks me to marry him, when he gets back.
I think to myself, "am I ready for that?"
Then he says "Please say yes."
I do.

Weeks later, two men at my door.
They say they need to speak with me. I don't know what for.
They hand me a letter, his picture, and the chain I gave him before he went away.
I sit there silently, dreading what they're going to say.
They say "Look at this picture. Do you recognize this man?"
I do.

It was him, my only love.
They told me the story of the bombs dropped from above.
They told me they were sorry but he didn't survive.
But because of his bravery there's another soldier alive.
They ask me if I understand that he's not coming back.
I do.

I'm older now, and have moved on.
I still think about him, especcially when I look at my son.
He doesn't know.
That his father, his real father, was a hero.
I do.

I sit in this chair;
He stands over there.
He turns, smiles, and then looks away.
I wonder, will I have the courage to tell him today?
I do.

whoa, fantastic write...really deep

I don't understand what it is with me about love poems and stories that involve losing someone, but today yours is the third I've read along these lines, and I just feel something. I've never read a poem so beautiful, where the core of it's meaning was in two simple words: "I do."

You let me remember how it is to cry today, thank you. I missed the feeling.

Oh, and welcome to PiP! I'll be looking for more of your work

Hi Dani,  welcome to a place where you can
grow in your poetry.  You will find many
here that are veterans as well as many who
are first time poets...  A safe place,  one
you can enjoy....

Very well done for a first poem.  A very
mature theme and thought from a young lady.

I hope you never have to endure this loss.
