Dedicated to Dr. Selma H. Burke, now in another world with angels like the ones she has sculpted.

It seemed to me that, in a sense, her truest gift
     was perhaps,
          within her heart,
          not hands, or mind or toil;
But rather, in her sharing soul.

Wisdom flowed through strong soft words
and chiselled from my static pose
a whirling dancer (she would know)
unlike the one which came before.

Selma's father
long ago had shared the secret
     we should know --
          of giving all,
               and more,
                    then some.
Selma shared that rule of thumb
     indiscriminately
with one wanting so to pass it on --
     emphasizing the words, "then some."
Now dancer dances Selma's song.

With pirouettes across the page,
dancer dances words she gave --
          tuneless songs
          her ink portrays
echoing Selma's "then some" ways --
inspired by Selma's "then some" prayers.

Roosevelt and Selma are no doubt both smiling at this write.
A beautifully written tribute to a talented artist! Thanks for writing and sharing this piece.

Thank you all for reading it.  I knew Dr. Burke for only a couple of hours on a plane trip, but she inspired me as though I'd watch her example for a lifetime!

iliana,
This was as beautiful as the story you told me about Selma.  (I've noticed the hours in which you've been posting and editing.  Iliana, I know you're a very busy woman during the day, so in effect, you post late or early a.m.   Please take time to rest!   We won't forget about your wonderful poetry if you don't post every day!) Take care,
                           Sadie
