A Slow Fall

There are years, around here,
when fall doesn’t fall…
it flies by
on zephyr wings
and arctic breath

when Summer jumps into Winter
as if invited to a polar swim fest
where men play like bears
with little sense ~

some years.

Not always.

This is a molasses kind of year,
running slow, almost late, as if there were
no time like the present,

as if there were one more ball to attend,
a special sort of ball,
where one dresses in grand style,

with beaus all standing around
just waiting for her grand entrance
she, the debutante,
who arrives,
in red,

just because the color suits her
and she glows
with all of summer’s warm
held within…

where she will dance the night away
before the clock strikes 12
before the magic subsides
before the kiss of crystal ice
and the beaus hold their breath
with the wind’s tease of shimmy…

and its icy gasp shrivels the thread of each bit of lace,
allowing all to fall around her ankles,

just after
her last dance of summer.

~*~

I liked it - made me think of home, of the wonder of the season change. Especially when you get to hold on to the warmth of summer just a little bit longer - when you get to be warm just a little bit longer and you're thankful for that.

Oh, wow! I think this is my favorite of yours; it is exquisite. I am wondering, ever so slightly, though, near the end you use the word gasp when I was expecting grasp. Both work there, I'm  just too curious not to ask.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

And isn't it pure poetry that it's the sugar maple who wears the brightest red? Couldn't be cottonwood or hickory or elm, it had to be the one with the sweetest sugar in her veins.....

Enjoyed.
Didn't happen that way here this year, so this was nice to read.
Appreciate your seasonal sensitivity.

Sunshine,
Ya did it again!  Wow... You escort people through time and travel.   As you so creatively pointed out, Summer to Winter can be one fast trip!   I so enjoy your writing.

A very tighly written, beautiful poem, with transitions that captured imagery so very smoothly.  Lovely.

I had a dream last night
you came to me on silver wings of light
I flew away with you in painted sky
Was it real
