The wind come November
Pays little heed to ill fit clapboards
And loose-framed windows
That haunt days and nights.

We built fires
The hearth always covered in ash
And huddled round the flame
You
Wrapped in Navajo
With geometric forms hiding softer curves
I knew were underneath it all

Our lives were simple then

Denim for dinner
Dressed up with plaid
We served delicacies of stew
On fine old tin
Along with the vintage bean
Aged well on woodstove
Cut twice with cream

We lived well
In each other’s skin
And cared for it gently
With laughter we could see
As mist on cold nights
Hanging suspended
Then inhaled by the other
As if some part of soul
Left lips
And waited for the others lungs
To breath them in

But November is easy
Compared to the month of bursting trees
When even well woven Navajo leaves one chilled

You waited tables then
And I
Found the old truck still knew the road

Somewhere around Taos I called
And you told me about “him”

So I wished you well
And warm,

Then headed east
Searching for a sunrise
And a chance to begin

Again

~ I'm there...

Oh, yes. The simple pleasures of those earlier days ~ now fading into watercolor memories.

Ron, this is a spectaular and 'warm' story set to poetry. You are such a master at telling tales.

We lived well
In each other’s skin
And cared for it gently
With laughter we could see
As mist on cold nights
Hanging suspended
Then inhaled by the other
As if some part of soul
Left lips
And waited for the others lungs

These words almost have me in tears. They are so touching and beautiful.

Hugs for warmth all winter, Marti

What a beautifully written poem. You are a wordsmith of dramatic imagery. You have incorporated so many exquisite word paintings, that it demands a second, third and fourth reading. Wow!
