Art: R.Giuffrida words featured in collage by John McCrae

mourning rises
over the Douai  plain
a mother stands
where sons were felled

at Vimy Ridge
the trenches remain
stretched across the field
empty veins

** Bear with me it's not often that I express patriotism or national pride nor do I want to glorify the horror of war. This poem is both a tribute to the Canadian war memorial at Vimy Ridge as well as the battle itself.

In gratitude for their efforts the government of France granted Canada the land to build the Vimy Ridge memorial. Surrounding the stunning memorial(including some of the most beautiful modern statues) are the trenches and tunnels of said battle. Beyond them a forest of canadian maples, one planted for each canadian who lost their lives in those trenches.
The battle earned the young nation of Canada the distinction of having a seperate signature on the peace treaty at war's end, helping recognize Canada as a seperate entity from England. if anybody's interested:

Extremely heatfelt and appreciated by this Canadian.  I took my granddaughter to the memorial by us yesterday where the service was held, and the bombers flew over as they usually do, and a tear escaped my eye as it usually does too, as I thought of all the mothers who were standing somewhere yesterday remembering a son or daughter.

The words below the post are yours, correct?  You have epitomized the loss, as much as we have written words of our own for Veterans Day, or Memorial Day, or the 4th of July.

No day that people serve their country, should a nation's feeling, go unrecognized.  Thank you, Raph, for sharing yours.

Thank you Linda few around the world remember or even know of canada's once great military acheivements

Thank you Mysteria, the main statue at the memorial is the weeping woman who represents the young canada weeping for her lost sons. Also there are two weeping nudes representing mothers and fathers of the dead. I wish I could visit and take pictures but most of all I wish more poeple of my generation would learn and care.

Thanks Mish that really means alot to me

The poem is mine Karilea, the words in the picture are not they are from the famous poem In Flander's Field
