On a good day by the mountain when I was eight, I sold over forty vanilla ice creams (chocolate-covered, on a stick), brought the two dollars and change of profit and laid it down on the kitchen counter next to the dollar my father would leave behind. I didn't see much of the old man. He would start out early, drop a dollar, sometimes two— would return late at night for some sleep. I understand I saw more of him when I was in a coma at the Montreal Neurological Institute when I was thirteen. But he did bring me a rubber ball to squeeze —to gain strength— after the angels felt sorry for my mother's tears and let me live. **** **** **** ..circa 2002..first Copyright 2002 Spiros Zafiris ..poem archived in several other sites |
