On a good day by the mountain
when I was eight,
I sold over forty vanilla ice creams
(chocolate-covered, on a stick),
brought the two dollars and change
of profit
and laid it down on the kitchen counter
next to the dollar
my father would leave behind.

I didn't see much of the old man.
He would start out early, drop a dollar,
sometimes two—
would return late at night
for some sleep.

I understand I saw more of him
when I was in a coma
at the Montreal Neurological Institute
when I was thirteen.

But he did bring me a rubber ball
to squeeze
—to gain strength—
after the angels felt sorry for
my mother's tears
and let me live.

Will the wind ever remember the names
it has blown in the past with
its crutch its old age and its widsom
it whispers no this won't be the last
