In the spirit of Hallowe'en

Those are the footsteps that creep up the stairs
followed by a twist of a knob, you're caught unaware
did you leave the door open for a visitor that night
were you in bed with a novel when fear took flight?

recognize that fear after a film on a haunted house
kept you fearful, wide awake
a ghoul creeped up on his prey, quiet as a mouse
a heinous plot was at stake
now you witness those steps on your very own
the old heart throbs, flesh is far from stone...

what when the door to your bedroom creeks ajar
and the shadow of a visitor beams in from afar
your better half then slips gingerly into the room
could just as well have been a lady on her broom!
