I wrote this for all those people who are handicapped or physically challenged in any way. It is often a day to day struggle for them to be accepted as just a regular person. * * * You look firstly at my wheelchair And then you look at me 'tho I know that you're not blind You are still unable to see I am really not that different I am really much like you 'tho some things may take time There's still much that I can do Please don't show me pity I can look after myself I'm not like a precious ornament That sits upon a shelf Please don't patronise me And don't pretend to understand I promise I will let you know If I need a helping hand There's no need to speak so slowly I can hear each word you say Just treat me with respect And you will truly make my day Just accept me as I am Don't treat me differently Try to step inside my shoes And in time I'm sure you'll see * * * "The most emotionally healthy people in our society are able to put themselves into other people's shoes, know how someone else is feeling and care about that. This capacity extends beyond sexual and family intimacy. It creates a circle of genuine feeling that can extend, eventually, to all of humankind." I am in motion |

Suetang, This was written with good perspective. Many of my friends have been handicapped and even i felt handicapped just wearing a simple leg brace temporarily. Not a good feeling to be treated differently. I just printed a copy for my husband to keep at work (he works for the board of mental retardation/developmental disabilities. He landed a contract with a noteable autoparts maker in the area of brakes and those "handicapped individuals" brought the rate of production quality by close to 17%. Needless to say, their thoroughness, may have saved people's lives. Thank you for bringing this to mind. Sadelite |

It's nice to see social conscience in a poet. Moreso when they write so well as you do. Kethry Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Unknown |

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I felt so strongly about writing this and I am in the process of writing another one called "My Disability Is Not A Curse". Sadelite - Thank you so much for your comment and I was humbled to read that you were printing off a copy for your husband to take to work. Thank you all so very much. Take care.........Sue I am in motion |

Sue, I understand this very well. My brother in law has been confined to a wheel chair for about 30 years now. The victim of being ejected from a car that had overturned. Four boys returning from a night in Mexico, underage drinking. He has difficulty speaking, is partially paralyzed on one side of his body, had to go through extensive therapy just to be able to feed himself. Yes, he is still a person, just as much as we are, with a unique personality, his own ways of doing things and not filled with self pity....We allow him to be as much of an individual as possible...I would not want to be in his shoes...and I am very thankful for what I have....his presence reminds us of what we should be thankful for. I am thankful that I still have him. Thanx for sharing this message, it is very true and says a lot about another part of our humanity that is not unique...they all deserve respect and the chance to live a life, a life of individuality... |

How true, I know I have done it. Although I try not to. This is a perfect example of how we should take everything at face value and not predetermine anything. John |

Barry I am so very grateful for your wonderful response and I guess so many people are just ignorant and are embarrassed to be around handicapped people. I have learnt a lot about this from my volunteer work which I am loving. John Thank you so much for your comment, and, yes, I think we are all guilty of staring at a handicapped person or treating them differently. Alyssa You always say the most lovely things about my writing and I am always truly humbled by all you say. Thank you all so very much. Take care........Sue I am in motion |

(big hugggsssssssss) God Bless You, dearest friend, you are one of the most sympathetic and loving friends I have ever known in my whole life that I am blessed to have deep in my golden heart, and it breaks my heart to see so many point their fingers, insult, or think of those with handicaps, as they bleed just the same as us and we are all of the same heart and we should love them all and open to them! (wipes tears) You truly are a comforting angel on Earth, sweet friend, God Bless You and everyone, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sue, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth |
