We were squatting on our heels around the cookfire.
I guess it must have been last Friday noon.
When the coosie nodded t'ward the west horizon...
He said, I 'low a storm is comin' soon.

The younger guys all laughed at his prediction...
But me, I tied my slicker to my kak-
Cause coosie was a cook for Jesse Chisholm,
He knows the trails to Abilene and back.

It wasn't long before the clouds were boiling,
At a guess, I'd say an hour, maybe two-
Them longhorns were a gettin' mighty skittish,
It would take the grace of God to get them through.

The thunder started crashing, lightning flashing-
I spurred my roan and headed for the lead.
This recipe had all the crucial makings-
To turn into a shore enough stampede.

We lost them near the Clear Fork of the Brazos-
Lightning flashed, the leaders broke and run...
The country's rough and, Mister, I was frightened
Afraid some one would die for we were done.

When the storm was past and we had gathered-
We tallied up our losses, filled with dread...
When Pete walked in, he was the last one missing-
We lost one horse, and about a hundred head.

We laughed a bit in rough cow-country humor,
As the coosie made the coffee strong and black.
I slipped out of my slicker, and I thanked him,
And rolled and tied it back behind my kak.

You ask me what's the moral of my story?
I don't suppose there is one, since you ask.
It's just another bit of bunkhouse gossip-
Among men to whom talking is a task.

For cowboys spend their life out on the prairie-
Their closest friend, a dun, or bay, or roan-
They never get to polish social graces...
Just like they live, they mostly die alone.
