Spirit Cloud

What is rain     mother
asked the sparrow’s child
long after the time of the last flood

I will show you said earth

gather me a spirit cloud
within my water jar
be careful not to spill for the well is dry

let it fill from the meaning of drink
until it is puffed and important

let it fly from your hand like balloons
in every color to amuse the sky

then as it rest over the tops of trees long gone
it will pierce your neglect with an arrow of fire

when the dry lake and river run gold
its burst will be felt

and you will know the meaning
of rain

Jesus Marti . . .
this one gave me goosebumps
maybe it is me but my God . . .
this feeling of impending rain
and the way you presented it
is quite amazing

A sense of teaching, but also a sense of seeking, seeking something that might never be found, or that might be just -- there, waiting for you to see.

A heartfelt walk on tiptoe, along the edge of the edge of the other side....beautiful.

I remember...
and it is as poignant
a read now
as it was then...

ah girl, your gifts...
are so bountiful.

Martie, I am serious, you would make a lot of money if you wrote young children's picture books like this.  I used to have many hundreds, and I'm a fussy buyer.  When we moved, I gave hundreds away.

Now I have about a hundred favorites left, each one beloved by my children, and now waiting for grandchildren to read to.  I'd buy yours in a second.   There is magic in your words, my friend.

Yes, yes, Martie, you have captured the importance of rain in this poem. Being a landscaper in the east, I have had battle with it this spring and all summer, yet I never curse it....have been through to many long bouts without it..Love the language in this poem, that rings of first nation influence, and how it moves my emotions..great job...ice
