~

I remember peach marmalade, thick, sweet,
and fresh-churned butter ready to eat
on biscuits baked fresh that morning
and brought in hot before dawn for selling.

Dewey wore overalls and high-topped boots,
had a stand out front for vegetables and fruits,
spent time in the back kitchen picklin’ beets,
or okra, or peppers, sometimes some pig’s feet.

The store smelled of fish ,and cinnamon, and pumpkin,
and fresh mint, and bait, and tack, and the corn bin
piled high with big ears the color of the sun,
that tasted so sweet and second to none.

On the walls hung yards of homemade quilts
right next to the wheelbarrow a farmer built
and brought in to sell for cash or seed,
for either trade likely would fit his need.

The air was easy as it sat around this place,
center of a universe far from the rat race,
with smiles and handshakes, as friends gather there,
the favorite topic, what to plant next year.

So what can we learn from this old country store
with the house out back past the creaky screen door?
Might be nice sometime to stop and converse,
and put a backward spin on our universe.

~

(big hugggssssssss) Oh my gosh, country stores are my favorites too, sweet friend, along with farmers markets! (kiss on cheek) Farmers markets always have organic and homemade foods that I love, as country stores have a wonderful mom-and-pop atmosphere to them as opposed to chain grocers and the traffic there! (sigh) I too wish we could move backwards a bit, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

It's been a long time
since I've been in a true
Country Store...

And a good Feed Store
and Hardware Store
and Drugstore...

thanks, dear.  This was delightful!

This was a wonderfully descriptive piece, Becky. The visuals you captured took me right into the scene through your words, back to a time and a place I enjoy visiting myself. Very nicely penned!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Makes you kind of restless wishing to have a counrty store once again.
We have a cider mill. In the fall they have fresh cider and you can watch them press the apple to make the cider. Fresh doughnuts in the making with the aroma of cinnamon and fresh apple pies and pumpkin what a delight.
They have crafts and homemade marmalade.
This coming season is a wonderful experience
to the taste buds and the aromas sending your head a reeling.
Love the poem.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. The store in my poem does exist in my past as I'm sure it does in yours too, and if we drive far enough out of the big city, we will find it standing there just as it was when we were young - americana at its best. Thank you all again.
