In the top drawer of the old buffet, nestled in the cool oak,
lies a faded lace tablecloth, handmade by women folk,
and layered in the gentle folds of the soft, cream tatted lace
rests the essence of her family and the tales of Clara’s grace.

Most meals were in the kitchen, the air, scented and warm,
but once a year as Christmas neared, the kitchen would transform,
filled with homemade dishes brought by all the family’s cooks,
all our favorite recipes from our own special cookbooks.

The dining room was ready, all the silver placed just right,
her china with its golden trim, her crystal shining bright,
and Clara, she worked hard back then to make it all just so,
and with the tablecloth of lace, the dining room would glow.

And when we all were seated, Grandma Clara’s voice was heard
saying grace in her own way, we hung on her sweet words,
‘We ‘tank you Lord, for ‘dis food, and for ‘dis family,
and for your Son who died for us up ‘der on Calvary.’

You know I could go on and on about those long gone days,
my memories, they stay alive in very special ways.
The table and the matching chairs, along with the buffet,
live here inside my dining room, the lace cloth packed away.

And when I think of Clara and her praise in broken English,
I think about the Christmases and family she cherished.
I wish that faded tablecloth was fixed and good as new,
and Grandma was still here to pray the way she used to do.

Grandma used to sing a song, ‘twas just a little one,
a silent night, a holy night, a night for the Father’s son.
I wish that I could sing like her, her soft and crystal voice
sang from a prayerful heart of lace, and in God’s name rejoiced.

Glade jul

Glade jul, hellige jul!
Engler daler ned i skjul.
Hit de flyver med paradis grønt,
hvor de ser hva for Gud er skjønt.
Lønnlig i blant oss de går.
Lønnlig i blant oss de går.

Passing shadows – thank you so much, I think you have read most of what I have posted here, and you’ve been so positive with your remarks, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Cpat Hair – yes, I think we all have something like this we can remember fondly, and isn’t it wonderful that we do!

Sunshine  - The memories of my childhood are intertwined in that lace tablecloth, and although it is tattered beyond repair, I cannot part with it.  I’m sure its my imagination, but I sometimes think I can smell grandma’s kitchen.. what a vivid memory I have of those days.. it is indeed a blessing. Thank you so much.

I have a few things of my grandparent's...nothing I can carry, for if I had that lace I would take a small piece and have it with me always...

I have a samovar from Russia, and my grandfather's rocker and the end table where he use to keep all the birthday cards written for the year...but most of all I have his stories of coming to America...and his delight in everyday life.

Thank you for your memories

Sunshine – oh I won’t, believe me! Thank you again –

Naked Thoughts – Oh my, sounds like you have some wonderful mementos! I also have stories that my grandfather told me about riding the rails, he led such a colorful life – and I’ve written a story about some of his tales.  But I think its too long for this forum.. thank you so much for your positive acceptance, its nice to know others can relate.

Enchantress – Be careful what you ask for – because I DO have more.  Lol

EvocativeVerse2 – you have penned some marvels my friend.  I enjoy your writing immensely. Thank you so much for your sweet comments.
