~

The tawny-skinned Creek stepped off the reservation
to climb the worn path toward the last remaining bastion.
Two jagged scars, like lifelines drawn on an old chief’s palms,
angled down along his cheek, his pure and perpetual alms.

His burden was heavy, drawn tight against his chest,
wrapped in the skin of a buck that had been killed and dressed.
The tender meat fed his family for weeks and then some,
as the tawny-skinned Creek carved his stone from God’s bosom.

Cold, hard granite, twenty pounds, maybe more,
he chiseled, shined, waxed, and rubbed the contours
of his work, some said the best he’d done by far,
he named his finished piece, “I Seen the Morning Star.”

The warrior of the stone was bent over, hand to ground,
his face turned upward, his gaze so profound,
his lance firmly planted and poised at his side,
it was God that he saw, as his mouth opened wide.

The brave’s heart was awestruck, he beheld such a sight,
in heavenly splendor, the star shone with such bright
and wondrous light, the brave fell to his knee to pray,
“I Seen the Morning Star,” his look did convey.

The old Creek carried his creation to holy ground,
wont to go alone and in silence, profound,
in reverence he climbed to the place where God’s eye
could bless his brave warrior in that altar so high.

Note - A Native American from the Creek Tribe came to my office some time ago and brought a sculpture he had made out of a heavy piece of granite. He explained the story of the Morning Star and his culture, and about how they believe that seeing the Morning Star is the same as seeing God. He had etched the name of the magnificent sculpture on the back in primitive writing, “I Seen the Morning Star.”

Thank you passing shadows, i thought it was going to just pass away quietly without even being noticed!  And you may still be the only one. But such is life, eh? Thank you very much for your comment.
