~Bridge To Yesterday~

Centuries ago in Bermuda
1620 to be precise
They built the world's smallest drawbridge
Twenty-two inches of space would suffice

Somerset Bridge, as it is called,
Connects Somerset Island to Mainland
When a vessel approaches, a passer-by
Will raise the bridge by hand

It's opening, a single plank
Will clear a sailboat's mast
Traffic light signals right-of-way
Till boat is safely past

To the west there's Elys Harbour
To the east is the Great Sound
Blessed is a heavenly place on earth
Where such beauty can be found

The next time you visit Bermuda
Take a jaunt across the isle
Experience a piece of history
Step back in time for awhile

~vlraynes

The original Somerset Bridge, was one of the first
three bridges built in Bermuda in the 17th century.
It remained operational until just a few years ago,
when it was rebuilt and it's mechanics were
modernized.

I always feel at a loss
when something that takes us
from here, to there,
is lost.

Well done, Vicky.  You know I love
pieces of poetry that show research,
combined with respect for what is
all around us.

To burn some bridges in our lives is a good thing!--but not a bridge such as this one that you have so poignantly shared with us!

The tearing down of the old to make way for the new, often saddens me.

Informative and moving write.

wow, thanks for the interesting read vicky. very small, and versatile it seems!
and yes, history, as well as bridges should be preserved.

Thanks for showing us

Vicky, strabgely this left me with the sense of the simpler way of life, before this, the PC, the cell phone, everything.
When people actually used paper and worked with their hands . . . we used to have a shoemaker across the sheet, Frank.  All the kids used to go in and watch him craft his trade, was quite amazing.

You dont see that anymore, we have Penneys and Bon Ton and Lord and Taylor . . .
sad, thank you for this . . .
xxoo

Vicky, what a beautiful way to present a wonderful message.  I will hold this poem and its message in my mind as "Great Wisdom".

Vicky,  yes,  bridges should be preserved
and never ever burned....for one might need
to cross a chasm at some point in future
time...across a bridge from the past.

Thanx for the history lesson....enjoyed.

Vicky,  Somerset is my favorite part of the island. I lived there as a young girl when Dad was stationed there in the Navy. It was an awesome experience and is a remarkble island.

My hubby and I have been back many times and each time we find another new place to explore. It amazes me how much the island has grown since I lived there! I guess it's called progress ... I call it a crying shame!

Hugs ....

(big hugggsssssss) Emotionally...I believe it is acceptable to burn bridges when tears are remembered, but traditionally, I believe it is wrong to burn bridges as they display the hearts of the architects and more importantly, the pride of tradition and memory! (sigh) This is a beautiful re-post, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Vicky, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Vicky - I've been to Bermuda a long time ago, but don't remember this delightful bridge. I must have missed it. Perhaps a reason to go back for another visit...
