                The Leaf

The leaf must move on.  He feels he cannot stay.
He sees another road and continues on his way.
He is moved by the Wind of Change…
Blowing in the Wind of Change.
The leaf is strong.  He will live long
if he’ll only make it through ‘til dawn.
Every night’s a frightful night
when the road ahead hides in moonlight.
To where is this Wind leading?
To where is life proceeding?
Though every day is an uncertain day,
the leaf would not have it any other way.
The unknown is enjoyed, and the thrill is employed.
There is only the End of the Road to avoid.
A life of wonder; a future in doubt...
these are what the leaf is about.
Whenever, however, whoever, whatever,
but whyever the continuing of this ever endeavor?
Other ways he’s put to test, and still this life’s the best.
He knows what can happen if he stops to rest.
Comfort among grasses where other leaves lie still…
where other leaves lose courage and adventure and will.
Though some are content to stay in their place,
this leaf knows there’s more journeying to face.
He knows he would get much relaxation,
but for now he must fight the fighting temptation.
Maybe another time, if another time comes his way,
he’ll stop for a day and enjoy a short stay.
But it may not be right to stay for the night.
What if the Wind calms down for a while?
What if the Wind does not blow for a while?
Will there be heartache?  Will there be pain?
Will the next sunrise be clouded by rain?
All things are possible, but the Wind will blow again.
Anything is possible, so into the Wind he’ll go again,
and in the morning he’ll see the sun rise,
wipe the dew from his eyes
and continue on to life’s next surprise.
