Too long ago
You waded in the edges
Not retreating fast enough to avoid
The spill of water
Into sanded shoes

And laughed
A wrinkled purse of face laugh
Chagrined
It happened yet again

Night fell behind us
Leaving no color for our sea
But a growing gloaming
And perhaps a yearning
To agree

Brush your lips
There is a crust of salt forming
That if I were to bend
And place mine on yours
I would taste the sea

You’d not have me taste the depths
Here on shallow shores
And I’d not swim well
If you let go
Letting me sink
Slowly to drown
In the color of you

Tides coming in…
And footprints are erased

Once…
Not once again

*nod* I hate this feeling. You always amaze me, and I'm glad I read this.

Ron

There is a magic in the ocean, that holds memories even after the footprints have been erased.  The meloncholy in this touched me.

This painting of the sea spoke twilight...of a love and of a time. Left me thinking of the briney depths that sometimes seem to swallow us.  Well done. TD

I must admit, I love a salty taste upon my lips. And I never get tired of feeling sand between my toes, nor the scent of salt air in my nose. And especially, I shall never tire of reading fine poetry.

"On Seashells and Sandals" -- a fabulous title for an equally fabulous piece of p-o-e-t-r-y!

You painted this with a graceful poetic brush...

This poem is perfect. You should take a bow. Bravo!( standing and applauding ). I really love it. From one who grew up on the beaches in Florida as I did, I can picture this scene so clearly in my mind, and you painted it so well! It put a smile on my face.
