“Rebuilding The Bridges Burnt Behind Me” Bridges burnt in the past; Nothing but charred timbers and ash. Relationship's fading thru the smoke, As the wind changes and I choke. Things left unfinished thru the years, Washed clean by the tears. One by one new boards are replaced, Old lumber, no longer defaced. Going back and repairing the breaches, As my lonely heart reaches, For those left behind because of foolish pride. Life is but a Bridge, made of emotions inside. I am rebuilding the Bridges I have burned; Hoping someday to find a way to return; To a life more simple and free; Where again, I can just be Me. An afternote: This poem took 20 years to write; I wrote the Title on a blank page in 1983 in California; now in 2003 in Florida it finally was completed, my life and travels have taken me from North to South; & East to West across the USA. When I put the title on a page years ago; I was unable to write more than the title; I placed it in the folder with my hardcopy poetry. it was brought out from time to time, but no words ever came forth for it. I recently dusted off the wooden box my hardcopies now reside in. I was transcribing them to post on my site at Poetrypoem.com when I came to the blank sheet with only a few words on it; I opened MS Word and began typing, finally a poem came to those few words I handwrote 2 decades ago. Keep all the short phrases and rhymes you think of, a small, blank, ruled hardbound notebook available at any Dollar General, Family Dollar, or Dollartree is invaluable, in-expensive $1.00 or just over) it safely keeps handwritten poems, use it as a journal (make notations about your feelings as you wrote the poem or phrases, anything that flashes thru your mind in can eventually be turned into a poem or used in another one. Never discard anything, no words, phrases, or rhymes. We Feel,We Write,We learn; We Write More |

A noteworthy theme, Steven, and some very wise advice in your comment section -- it's too easy to throw something away but may be impossible to recover when needed or wanted again... It's a great idea to always have access to paper & pen (or a recorder of some kind in my case with music...). I get the feeling you have much more wisdom to share with us & am looking forward to it. -MVS You CAN make a difference: |

Great poem, Steven... “We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” –Robert Louis Stevenson |

I am glad that this poem was so enjoyed by all...... We can leave those we know behind when we feel the winds changing. But eventually we will need to go back and repair the damage we done if we wish to have peace in our lives. I suppose I had to rebiuld a few before I could write about it. There was an old song form the 60-70's era, some of the course went like this: "All those Burning Bridges that have fallen after me, all those lonely people and those fading memories, Burning Bridges lost for evermore." I believe I had been listening to that song when I jotted the title to this poem dow, I also distanced myself from many of my friends and family, I had many problems with my family and preferred to stay away from their politics and still do for the most part; but with the deaths of several of my Aunts in recent years, I have slowly begun to make contact with family members again, I have taken up Genealogy as a pass-time, this often means contacting family members to update old records. When you do, you renew old relationships with these family members; and a new era begins. We Feel,We Write,We learn; We Write More |

Oh yes, sometimes we need to go back and repair the damage we may have done in haste. This is wonderful, and the ending is the best...excellent! ~S~ Accept these small gifts from my gypsy heart ~~S~~ |

Thank You for such kind words; my response is slow, my old compaq drcided to do a "Crash & Burn" last Thursday; I lost everything with it; I am glad my poetry was all posted at my Poetrypoem site and that will save time in recovering my writing, I still look at 1-2 weeks in recovering it totally.
