The Chair I've Been Assigned |

The Chair I’ve Been Assigned I ride in a vehicle. It has been A long and boring trip. I amuse and flirt playfully with Cokie. Protectively, she wraps her legs Around my waist As we laugh and tease each other. The bus stops; The trip is over. Time for me to leave. I encounter Cokie’s husband. He’s just been preoccupied with something. He teases me lightheartedly About me and his wife. I step off the bus And find myself deep in the woods, And it is night. I feel chilled By a cold and penetrating drizzle. I look through the dense shrubbery For the chair I’ve been assigned to live on. It seems I have been Living on this chair, out here, For days, or maybe even weeks, Yet I have somehow managed. An old man to my left Sits near me on the ground. He doesn’t have a chair. He says he was supposed to get one, But nobody did the paperwork. He wants to know If I can help him. I tell him That I’ll see what I can do. I have no idea where to go, And strike off in a random way Hoping I’ll eventually find something. I run blindly through the woods, Cold and wet, Shivering against the pouring rain. I walk into an open door, A building; it has a wooden floor. And it is warm. And it has a fireplace, And there are many people there. A man hands me a tray And starts to tell me All the things they have: There is roast beef .. and turkey .. And there is ham … and potatoes .. And there is pork … mutton … and fish … And there are all kinds of vegetables .. And the says what do I want? I am startled. I don’t mention it, Don’t want to bother people Complaining that I haven’t eaten, That I never, ever thought there would be food … Not way out HERE. I think about the old man. I don’t know the way back to him. It seems he has been living With no chair For days, or maybe even weeks, Yet somehow he has managed. The man takes me to a seating area Covered from the rising storm outside. Then a woman comes to me … And she is bringing Quite a lot of food … Jaime |

Jaime, yes, interesting...very visual and seemed to be somewhat of a journey that a homeless person might take... |

Hmm, chairs outdoors and food...are you going to a BBQ soon? Or time to visit the grocery store again? (chuckled at the Cokie dream) |

a very intriging write...and I believe you are reinterating your life...the man without a chair was a lesson to where you might be one day...it frightened you...and you were carried into a place through greive and dispair...of change...miraculously...through all this, you survived, and there is someone in your life who has been there for you helping your through this confusion, perhaps fear...but you know that all will be well, as she's been helping you along??? Perhaps it is my own intripritation and not yours, but it seems to me that there is a very happy ending...freedom....thank you for sharing such a very wise write...hope I'm not to far off base...but then you never know...as our minds see many things....never the less, astounding is this life and our own journey.... |
