Children fear monsters lie under their bed
But what if the monster is parent instead?
No way to run and with no place to hide
Terror and love must rest side by side.

Caught in a nightmare, no will to resist
They surely wonder why they must exist
Comforting arms swiftly become raised hand
To punish transgressions they don't understand

Long sleeves in summer may make lots of sweat
But showing the bruises is more of a threat
If someone should see, explanations are offered
Then once back at home, more lashes are proffered.

Sleeping on tummy, striped backside's too sore
Tears trickle out and they beg for no more
And as they grow older, they fear that they will
Continue travesties of "parenting skill."

You shine a light on a very dark problem. You lend your voice to silent victims.

A difficult topic to write about but you have done it with candor and compassion.

And yes, to add to the travesty these behavior patterns become ingrained in the victims themselves.

Warm hugs,
Linda

So hard even to say after the fact, let alone to go through.... we tend to say an excellent poem is "beautiful"... and this poem is, in the way that an Abrams tank is beautiful...because it irresistibly does what it is there to do...ugly or not.

Well done, Ruth -- well done.

Martie: It's a vicious chain that binds too many. Thank you very much for that commendation... it's greatly appreciated. *S*

EA: The voice was quiet far too long... I thank you so much for listening.

Ratleader: No... there's no beauty here. *S* But your "well done" means so much... for I know mission was accomplished. *S* Thank you!

Ceinwyn: I am truly sorry... I wouldn't wish a second's more pain... honestly.

Suthern belle,
Well now you know why I don't do CPS anymore... I don't do well with experiences that cause hurt. You write the painful truth too well. And bless you for caring so much. Also, ditto Toe.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

just know you have them.. many others you don't share... seems a shame... to horde all those away and deny us all the pleasure of reading them...

OK..so I'm a nag... big eal..lol... I've been called much worse..and that was by family..

well I watched a show on abuse, a real life documentary, where the abuse got to the point where the abused felt he had no choice but to kill the (grand)parent, the jury had pity on him, for many had also felt the pain of the 'stripes', but the judge was vindictive, and while he only sentenced him 5 years for manslaughter, the DA had stressed because he took money from his dead grandfather's wallet that he had committed armed robbery(even though it was money that he had earned and his grandfather had taken away) and due to the definition of 'armed robbery' the jury did find him guilty of the charge, and the judge gave him 'life'...
sigh....that judge had never, ever experienced the abuse and the deprevity of life that drives a person to believe that murder is the only way to find freedom....how sad that we are heard by a jury of our peers, but then 'judged' by a person who never lived a single day like the 'common' people of this world
wonderful write lady...fits well into my deep dark thoughts today...

Larry: You’re a good man, Mr. C... one who’s had far too much hurt... and still offers a heart full of caring. *S* I thank you so very much. *S*

Cpat: Nagging can be a very good thing, yanno. *G* Some of us need it! *S* And I’m not even pretending innocence when I say that... I know I do. *G* I sincerely thank you... for both the help and the nudging. *S*

Sweet jellybeans: I wish dark thoughts never dimmed your day, dear friend... I thank you so much for reading and a story that happens too often. *S*

Ruth-girlie...

what can one say to such painful truths...
not even your gift of rhyme can cadence away the reality of this heartbreak...

Seems I've spent a lifetime trying to love away these wounds when I am blessed enough to be given the chance to be trusted ....they say some scars never heal and sometimes love aint enough...but you know me... the moth will die trying.

you know that I know that you know that I know.

*sigh*

and no one should ever know..........

No matter what the differences
No matter what the cost
When words become our weapons ...
All that's beautiful is lost.

Sweet Suthern Lady,
Not so much from my own experience, but you do know that I know of this...as well as other types of abuse inflicted upon my daughter.
I know  that this type write hurts to write.
Thank you, dear friend, for sharing your heart.
Hugs to you, Ruth

It breaks my heart to think of the children who live this nightmare day in and day out.  My kids may not have a perfect life, but they sure have it good.  Suthern, thank you for this compassionate poem of yours.

A sad but all too real topic.  I know a few people who were abused as kids.  I read some horror stories in their journals and diaries.

You’ve written about a very delicate subject which not only hurts, but one which must be addressed more often and you’ve done a superb job in doing so.

Children are children.
Environmental impacts.
Loss of innocence

Thanks for sharing,

A film documentary could hardly record this with greater clarity.
The love/hate parallels create very troubled lives to which we are indeed "trained".  Your title is truly apt.
And those who choose to break the cycle, though they may find a certain peace, suffer even greater loss.
Thanks for sharing.

(big hugggsssssssss) Oh Suthern, it is horrible how children keep getting abused like this, dearest friend, to me that is the worst crime one can ever do and I pity all those who scar their own flesh and blood for life! (wipes tears) My prayers are with all the victims, dearest friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Suthern, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

JM: I do know. *S* Thank you, lady... and keep trying (not that you'd do otherwise *G*) Everyone needs assurance they have value... the longer it is before they get that, the harder it is to believe.

garysgirl: Thank YOU for accepting the share so graciously. *S*

Blues: It breaks mine, too... and your kids are so lucky to have you! *S* Thank you so much!

pisumnux: You may know even more than you think... and that's the truly sad part... how prevalent it is *S* Thank you very much!

2dalimit: Thank you so much... for both the comments and the very appropriate verse. *S*

Marge: And I have wonderful friends. *S* Thank you! *S*

Krawdad: You leave me speechless... for yes... there's loss in continuing... also loss in not... no real win. Thank you!

Sunshine: Again... I lack the words to tell you what your response means to me... please hear all the whispers hanging onto a simple Thank You! *S*

Cpat: But this took decades to be ready... even if only minutes to write! *G* So waiting can be a good thing! LOL I do thank you, Cap'n... very much. *S*

Nick: My pen and I both thank you so much!

PDV: It couldn't help but... *S* Thank you for showing it such kindness. *S*

M'Toe: Your response is so compassionate... thank you very much!
