fairy laughter ( this is the old fairy laughter with an extended ending) I am the Watcher on the Hill. Dark the night and all is still. Crystal bright the faint stars gleam. Yet nothing is ever what it seems! Silent the stones stand circle round. Enclosed an ancient hallowed ground. Nothing moves but my lips in prayer. Summoning forth the changeling Hare. As the moon slips from behind a cloud. In the circle erect and proud. By moonlight now the change displayed. Gone is the Hare, now see the Maid ! Bright her eyes of jewels made. Flashing green deep colour jade. Black her hair long hanging glows. Shining silk her wantons clothes. White and proud her rounded breast Hidden and revealed by a silken dress. Now she moves or is it flows. Beneath her clinging liquid clothes Now she dances, wild music rare. Called by magic from the still night air She leaves and I must follow after. Enslaved by the sound of her fairy laughter She goes to where the village lights Sparkle and beckon this summer night. Her laughter hangs on the still night air A fairy creature without soul or care On the green before the village inn She dances, drawing forth the men to sin. From the crowded inn they pour Light streaming from the open door. At her dancing feet gold coin is thrown She dances for one man alone For one alone her cloud of hair is tossed His heart and soul are forever lost His lips receive the fairy kiss What mortal girl can better this? She whispers,"Mine, forever mine"! As thier arms and bodies intertwine For such bliss a price is paid Over long in the grass they laid For see the sun is but newly up Now he sups from his bitter cup In the cold still morning air Gone the Maid, now see the Hare All he hears is the mocking sound Wild laughter from the woods around There is a new Watcher on the Hill Dark the night and all is still His lips in supplication and in prayer In vain they call the changeling Hare arthur( with special thanks to Enchantress for her help with this) |
