A Life on Wheels

I have friend across the sea, who lives her life on wheels,
It made me wonder how that is, but more so how it feels,
And at the risk of being blunt, one day I asked away;
I'm glad I had the guts, 'cause there was much she had to say.

I have a friend across the sea who wonders how I feel;
The many challenges I face - imagines how I deal.
I'm glad she had the guts one day to freely ask away,
For only when you ask you'll learn what I might have to say.

How does it feel when people speak about you while you're there,
To think you cannot answer for yourself seems quite unfair!
And does it happen now and then, they think you are insane,
Because a wheelchair surely means you also lost your brain!

To speak about me as if I'm not there is as if they are speaking to air
One never knows about an issue for which I may have a care.
How often it happens is one of pure disdain
Only when I run over friends need I be considered insane.

And how about the folks that find you "little" jobs to do?
Who think you're bored most of the time, as they don't have a clue
You're competent to fill your time with interesting stuff;
The hours in a day, or week, seem never quite enough.

The folks who find me little jobs don't think I can see through
They  think I'm bored, they really are the ones without a clue
My days are interestingly filled quite nicely you see
People often complain I'm busy as a bee.

I know you're grateful for all help from family and friends,
But don't you sometimes feel frustrated by their good intents?
And are you given half a change to find out on your own
That you've got what it takes to leap some hurdles all alone?

Grateful I am for help from family and friends
Sometimes though seems the help is without end
I wish for times without a disapproving tone
A chance for mistakes as I venture on my own.

The question following's not meant to poke around or pry,
But may I ask about your hope to find a loving guy;
The one who's capable to see beyond your handicap
And loves you for the woman that you truly are instead.

Your questions previous do not poke or pry
My dreams and hopes are to find a loving guy
Many males find me to be a true and loyal friend
Just once I wish his feelings could lean towards affection.

I'd like to thank you from my heart for writing this duet,
And hope with all my heart from now on no one will forget
You're so much more than eyes can see, to me you are godsend,
You've touched me in so many ways - I'm glad you are my friend.

It's me my friend who wishes to thank you for this chance
To tell a story with one for whom words seem to dance
A friend across the sea physically you may be
A true admiration whom I just look inside to see.

Munda and Dawn

This was charming!!!  I enjoyed the question answer format.  I think you ladies did a great job talking about a subject that some might be afraid to broach.  Bravo!!

The openness to ask; the willingness to respond...this should be hung in every rehab center around the world.  God bless you both for your honesty, AND integrity!

I would again like to thank you Munda for writing such a special poem so close to both of our hearts with me.  I learned a lot about myself in the writing of my part of the poem.

First of all I'd like to thank YOU Dawn, for the courage to deal with my never ending curiousity and your honesty. I'm very honoured for this opportunity to write with you and share this poem on the blue pages. You're an incredible gentle and beautiful Lady and I love you dearly.

Marti, Sunshine and serenity - Thank you so much for your uplifting words. You have no idea how touched I am by them. thank you.

This is an absolutely wonderful write.  A handicap is only as limiting as we allow it to be.  Standing tall is as much an emotional feat as it is a physical one - You've done a marvelous job of showing us that, ladies... Thank you, thank you, thank you....

This was so beautiful and inspirational! Deeply moving! My first reading of it was rather quick because I just wanted to see what was coming next! I was so engrossed in your conversation. The second read through, was much slower and I really absorbed the essence of it.

Unique and very special collaboration!

Loving hugs and warm smiles to you both!

Darn, I wish I'd written this! But since I didn't, all I can do is take you back to the top.

This is an awesome duet the two of you wrote. I hope both of you decide to grace us here with more in the future.

Sometimes we have to follow a stronger voice, even if it's silent.

Well ladies, this was absolutely unbelievably truthful and informative.  I plan to take this over to Evergreen House and read it right out loud in front an assembly when the caregivers come to the annual meeting.  You have NO idea how these folks are treated like they suddenly are insane like you have said, and they will be the ones to absolutely love this poem and grin from ear to ear.

Hats off to you both, and hope you don't mind it being read to folks (you will be given full credit of course) I will email you how it goes but it's not until the first week of September at a fund raiser.  Thank you, thank you and thank you again, from all of them!
