my daughter caught fireflies
   for me to see
and kept them
for hours
       in a cage
till I came home

and when I came home
        she showed me

they were not as bright as her eyes

   but being a good girl
she went to release them
after I had seen

          she opened the door
and waited
   but they
didn't go
          so

she dumped them out
shook them loose from bondage
in the frontyard

and it pleased her

so now
many hours later

I see them

their lights burning like drowning wicks

in the same places they fell

and I think:

do I tell her not to do that again?
        to save their precious lives?

or do I
tell her

  she showed me
         the constellation
                 Innocence
there
   in
      the grass

This heart that you reveal is the heart I fell in love with...

you ARE spark and buzz and dash, and lovely grateful freedom falling on the grass, free to fly away.

This is YOU...and beautiful, bri...

Brian, my friend...this is precious.

I can just picture her showing them to you,
and her eyes glowing with pride in her catch.
Nothing more beautiful than the innocence of
a child..and you've written it perfectly.

to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty"

I believe

she showed you
the constellation
        innocence

in her eyes.

You had us there,
watching...

Ohhhh I love this write and I can so relate to it for I have been teaching my two year old grandson the joy of catching ligtning bugs this summer.  But we let them go into one of my flower beds soon after capturng them so they can safey fly away back into the night.

Truly enjoyed this one.

and?
she found them the next day..in the sunlight
all around the firefly cage she had put down

still there

sigh
she squatted
then stood up
with a stunned expression

growing up sucks........
