Alzheimers’ Victim one day her thoughts are keen her wit is sharp the next... she faces me with a blank stare; asks, “How do I get home?” one day she finds her clothes and they go on easily the next she only has “the clothes on her back” there are no more to be found she looks at her pants “Do I put these on?” One leg goes in, the other seems to disagree, or maybe it’s that she can’t recall whether she is dressing or undressing simple tasks are mountains washing her hands, mind-boggling finding her way into her bed a challenge of Olympic proportion we lower it making it more accessible I ask, “How did your bed sleep last night, now that we lowered it?” It’s a good day! She replies, “I don’t know how my bed slept!” Laughter spills from both of our lips and our hearts. Good days are good. ©July 10, 2003 Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |

Yes, they sure are. I do understand this, having worked with someone with Alzheimers who used to sing to me almost every time I visited him, but never remembered my name, even after four years. And the good days for him became good for everyone. |

My mom had Alzheimers'and Parkinsons'. Yes she had good days and bad days. So hard to watch. One day we were sitting at the table and I was crying not knowing which way to turn and just for a little while her mind cleared. She said, "Oh honey please don't cry." Then she looked at me and said. "Please don't hate me for the things I do cuase I love you with all my heart." Then her mind was gone once again. |
